Wild dogs are usually part of a dog pack. Only one dog is the leader within the pack. In your home your dog considers your family to be his pack. Dogs have a natural instinct to be the pack leader. If you do not assume a leadership role your dog will try to take on the role of the alpha dog or pack leader.

All the chief decisions, for the pack, are made by the alpha dog. The focus of attention for dogs in the pack is always on the alpha dog. The alpha dog is very protective of his position as the leader of the dog pack. The position of alpha leader is not, usually, given up willingly.

Is it clear who the alpha dog is in your family? If you don't assume a leadership role your dog will try to establish himself as the leader . An alpha dog is not always male, in a dog pack the gender does not matter. Male dogs are often the alpha leader because females, of the same breed, are usually smaller. In your household a female dog will take on the alpha dog role if the position has been left vacant. When your dog feels that he is the alpha dog within your family he will exhibit bad or destructive behavior. If your dog thinks he is the alpha dog he will be difficult to control and will tend to show aggressive behavior towards other dogs.

If your dog begins to think of himself as your equal it is because he is confused as to who is the alpha dog. It is very important that you display the qualities of an alpha dog leader all the time. The alpha qualities are displayed by voice tones, body language and an attitude of confidence. The alpha dog leader must be comfortable with the role as leader.

It is through small deliberate acts that the alpha dog maintains his dominance. An example of this is that the alpha leader is always the first one in the pack to eat. This could mean that there is little left to eat when it is the pack's turn to eat. The alpha dog does not go around the pack, he will show his dominance by nudging his way through the pack. The alpha dog controls the things that are within the pack's sphere of influence.

Why is it important to understand what the alpha dog does in a dog pack? This is your family, why should you be concerned with the dog hierarchy and its functioning? The answer to that question is obvious. Being the alpha dog leader should not require force or physical or verbal abuse of any kind. As you emulate the practices of an alpha dog you will become the alpha dog leader to your dog.

It is easier to establish yourself as the alpha dog with a puppy than it is with an adult dog. This is especially true if that adult dog has been its own alpha dog leader. Maintaining your role as the alpha leader is something you must continually work at, even with a puppy. You must guard your role as alpha dog 24 hours a day.
